This is lovely little deal. Can you make 4♠ with two trump losers and two Heart losers? Well, actually, yes – in fact you may well end up not losing a Heart at all...! Yes, really!
At the table North found the best lead of a low Diamond, won by the ♦A. Declarer played off the ♠A and learnt the bad news. He then cashed three top Clubs, pitching his Diamond, and ruffed a Diamond in hand. Then came the ♥K. If North took his ♥A he was end-played, forced to give away a Heart trick or provide a ruff-and-discard. So, correctly, he ducked the ♥K. Now West exited with a trump to South. That player cashed his two trump tricks and exited with the ♣10. Make that “tried to exit with the ♣10”. West simply threw his ♥4 on it leaving South on play. With only Diamonds left South was obliged to lead one, so away went the last Heart as dummy ruffed. So with two Heart losers and two trump losers declarer managed no Heart losers and a Club loser. If that sounds a little odd – would it help if I said that declarer was Irish? Begorrah!
