A spectacular deal with North-South able to make 7♦ and even 7NT. The latter requires a squeeze on East so is not recommended as a contract but 7♦ is an excellent spot. Any chance of bidding it? Well, much depends on whether West opens 2♠ or not and how high East is prepared to raise the barrage. Even with a clear run it isn’t easy although after 1♦ – 2♣ – 3♦ that South hand is enormous. Let’s see how the play (and bidding) might go in 7NT. Firstly, the bidding (remember, this is pairs!):North’s 3♠ was intended to ask for a Spade stop (is that what it means in your methods? Ask your partner!) Anyway, South was after a bigger prize. Now the play… The ♠K lead won is by the ♠A then South should cash the ♥A after which he should run the Diamonds throwing a Club and two Hearts. On the last Diamond East is squeezed. If he throws the ♥K South throws a Club and his hand is high. If he throws a Club (as he will in practice) then South throws the ♥Q and hopes the last four Clubs are good. On this layout they are. For the record, just two pairs out of over 200 bid and made 7NT (and only three bid and made 7♦).
