How can South guarantee his contract without losing a potential Heart, 2 Diamonds and a Club ?This hand comes from “Playing with Trumps” by Sally Brock from Batsford’s How To Play Bridge Series and involves a technique known as an Avoidance Play. The problem suit is Diamonds. If East is allowed to win a trick and play a Diamond through Declarer then declarer risks losing 2 Diamonds, a Heart and he may well misguess the two way Club finesse. To cut communications between the 2 defenders declarer has to “Duck the first trick”. East will never be able to get the lead. After winning the second trick, Declarer can draw trumps and then finesse the clubs through East into the safe hand (not minding if the club finesse is wrong as his Diamond King would still be protected). Now this technique pays handsome dividends as declarer brings home 12 tricks and never puts the contract at risk.
