East-West should reach 3NT easily enough on this one (1♦ – 1NT – 3NT) but the play isn’t at all obvious on a Heart lead. Obviously declarer can make the hand by taking the ♥A and playing a low Spade, relying later on the Diamond finesse – but what is the best play? Playing the ♥Q risks losing three Hearts, a Spade and maybe a Diamond, depending on how the subsequent play goes. There will be scores ranging from -100 to +630 I reckonYou are playing in a pairs event (remember) and South leads the ♥2 against 3NT. What is your best line of play, given that communication is bad? Probably best is to risk the ♥Q at trick one – if it wins you are very well placed for overtricks.
