Hand 1 - Double fit.
With good fits for both sides you’d expect someone could make something good but, in fact, all that is on offer to either side is a part-score. East-West are unlucky to fail in 5♦ whereas double-dummy defence (the ♥A lead and a few Heart ruffs) can hold North-South to just seven tricks in Spades. If East opens 3♦ South might overcall 3♠ and West may well bid 5♦. North has to avoid the pitfall of supporting Spades at the five-level or his fingers may get burnt. If North does bid 5♠ how reasonable is it for West to lead the ♥A? If he does – how do you defend? Assume you have brilliantly led the ♥A. Now what? The ♥Q? Well, that will be covered and ruffed and East is sure to play a Diamond (reading the ♥Q as a suit preference signal). The ♥J at trick two, perhaps? Well, if South astutely ducks that in the dummy East will assume that South has the ♥Q and will ruff and lead a Diamond. Best is to play the ♥5, making sure that East plays a Club at trick three. Now you can lead the ♥Q. East knows where the ♣A is now and will (should) lead another Club to you.

We use this to explain technical coups like end-plays, squeezes etc.2.4 - You can review the last trick by clicking on the last won or lost trick (back of card) at the bottom of the screen.
