North-South should reach a Heart part-score here. After three Passes South has a classic suit-below-the-singleton opening bid of 1♣ and then the auction should go 1♣ – 1♦ – 1♥ – 2♥ – Pass. Quite how many tricks should be made in Hearts isn’t clear. Best defence is a trump lead, ducked all round, and for East-West to play two more rounds of trumps when next on play. Although North-South can make 3♥ many will be grateful to make eight tricks.Trump leads are often a good idea against this sort of bidding. East does best to duck the Heart lead to South who will lead a Diamond, ducked smoothly by West. South has a horrible problem now and he may try dummy’s ♦J. East wins the ♦Q and plays the ♥A and another Heart. On the ♥A South unblocks the ♥Q and wins the third Heart with the ♥J. Now the ♦K is led and run to West, declarer pitching a Spade. On a Diamond return South must finesse the ♦8 and cash the last two Diamonds, throwing a Spade and a Club. A Spade to the ♠K loses to the ♠A and a Spade is conceded to East but declarer has the rest.
