North-South can make 6♣ here against any defence. It may look awkward to play but with both red suits breaking 3-3 you can always set one up for an all-important discard in the other. The bidding may well prove an interesting test. Few will miss the slam if North opens 1♣, assuming that it shows 4+ cards. Where North opens 1NT (as will happen at many tables) or 1♣ – to show 13 cards and any number of Clubs – then there may be all sorts of problems.Once you have gone beyond 3NT in a pairs event there is no point in playing in 5♣ so you may as well take a punt and hope for the best lead (and the best dummy!). So how do you play 6♣ on a trump lead?Good (ish) odds can be obtained in Hearts by playing off the ♥A K. If West has any doubleton honour or the suit breaks 3-3 there will be a discard in the dummy for the losing Diamond. If nothing good happens on the ♥A K and the suit fails to break after a third round then you have to take the Diamond finesse.
