The bidding plays an important part on this hand but the actual West missed the inferences. West opened 1♣, East responded 1♥ and South (who had already Passed) felt entitled to join in with 1♠. West tried 3NT and that ended the auction. North led his partner’s suit (heaven preserve me from partners who don’t!) and West took stock. “Nothing much to this hand”, he thought, “I’ll just take the Heart finesse and chalk up some overtricks.” The ♠8 lead was covered by the ♠10 and ♠J and won by the ♠K. A Club knocked out the ♣A and South exited with a Heart. West needed the finesse so he played low but North was there with the ♥K and another Spade lead sunk the contract. Two down. If West had counted the points he would have known that North must have either the ♥K or the ♣A (South was a Passed hand, remember) but at that stage of the hand he was sunk anyway. The right play is to play dummy’s ♠Q at trick one to block the Spade suit. South wins the ♠A (ducking is no good) but is stymied – another Spade will be run to the ♠10 and a switch to another suit gives declarer the tempo. South does best to play a Heart at trick two; if he does, West must decide to rise with the ♥A and immediately play on Clubs to make his game. Tricky, but the bidding does suggest the winning line.
