A neat little deal, this one. At one table, playing a weak No-trump North opened 1♦, East Doubled, South Passed, West Passed (what else?) and North tried to improve matters by issuing an SOS Redouble (anything must be better than playing in 1♦ Doubled with a trump suit of ♦A 7 4 2). North-South have a contract available in Hearts so this was very much the right thing to do – anyway the interest of the deal lies in the play and the upshot of all of this was that East finally arrived in 3NT. South led the ♥10 and how should the play go? Well, North played the “obvious” defence of three rounds of Hearts, giving East his ♥Q, while dummy threw a Spade. Seizing his chance declarer played off the three top Spades (throwing a Diamond from the table) and led a Diamond. North could duck as many Diamonds as he liked but eventually he had to take the ♦A and lead a minor suit giving access to the dummy and all those luscious Diamonds. Contract made. “Nothing I could do, partner”, said North, sadly. No? Try winning the Heart lead and playing, wait for it, a low Diamond at trick two! Now when North regains the lead he can cash the ♦A and get off lead by playing the ♥A and a low Heart and dummy is isolated. A very hard defence to see at the table.
