Daily Bidding Questions by Frank Stewart

When Frank Stewart's "Daily Question" column was (and is still) published, each hand has a companion bidding question which is, or is not, related to the said hand.

With Vu-Bridge, best is to gather these questions as a quiz, for your enjoyment...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 9 5 4
 K Q 7 6 2
 2
 A K 3

Q: 1 - What do you bid next?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: To bid 3NT and be done with it is tempting, but partner's sequence shows extra strength. If he held a minimum hand such as Q6, 3, AKJ763, Q642, he would have rebid two diamonds. Bid four clubs. You may reach six diamonds when partner has 3, A3, AKQ864, Q642.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A 7 4 3
 7 6 4 2
 K Q 5
 J 8

Q: 2 - Your partner's 1NT shows 16 to 18 points. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NT2
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: If the opponents are vulnerable or if neither side is vulnerable, you can accept a profit by doubling for penalty. If only your side is vulnerable (and especially at matchpoint scoring), go for your game. Cue-bid three diamonds as a substitute for the Stayman convention or bid 3NT.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q 7 6
 A K J 8 4
 A 9 4
 10 4

Q: 3 - What do you bid now?
SouthWestNorthEast
122Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Partner's bid of two spades suggests a five-card or longer suit. If he had only four spades, he would have to find a different call (perhaps a negative double). Bid three spades. A raise to four spades would show better support and a slightly stronger hand.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 7 5 4
 A 9 8 3
 10 7
 A K J 6

Q: 4 - What do you bid now?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Even if your partner is apt to open light, shapely hands, this hand is too promising not to commit to game. Your values are prime, the jack of clubs may be a winner and you have a possible ruffing value in diamonds. Jump to three spades -- forcing after your response at the level of two.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 7 3 2
 A 8 3
 K 6
 8 7 6 5

Q: 5 - What do you bid over 3?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Dble3
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Your opponent's raise is weak and preemptive. If he wanted to try for game, he could have redoubled or used a conventional strength-showing action. Since game is possible, don't be intimidated. Bid three spades. Even a bold four spades would be better than a pass.
