Daily Bidding Questions by Frank Stewart

When Frank Stewart's "Daily Question" column was (and is still) published, each hand has a companion bidding question which is, or is not, related to the said hand.

With Vu-Bridge, best is to gather these questions as a quiz, for your enjoyment...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 10 8 5 2
 K 6
 Q 10 9 4
 A 5 4

Q: 1 - Your partner opens one heart, you respond one spade, he bids two diamonds and you raise to three diamonds. Partner then bids three spades. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 5: Though you had minimum high-card values to raise to three diamonds, the hands seem to fit well. Your ace is a good card opposite partner's shortness, and your king of hearts will solidify his suit. Bid five diamonds. He may hold A Q 7, A J 7 4 2, A J 6 5, 2.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 3 2
 K 9 8 7 6 5
 K 7 2
 8 5

Q: 2 - Your partner opens one spade, and the next player passes. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1NT: Your hand certainly isn't strong enough for a response of two hearts; for that, you would need an ace besides. You must respond, however, since your partner could hold a fairly strong hand such as A K 6 5 4, A J 3 2, A 3, 7 4. Bid 1NT. If he rebids two spades, you'll pass. If he bids two of a minor suit, you can try two hearts.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q 6 3
 8 3
 K 9 6 5 2
 7 6 3

Q: 3 - The dealer, at your left, opens one club. Your partner doubles, you respond one diamond and he bids one spade. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1DblePass
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Partner doubled before bidding his suit, hence he has substantial strength. His hand is worth 17 points or more, and you have three good spades, a possible ruffing feature and a working king. Raise to two spades. Partner may hold A K J 10 4, A Q 6 2, A 4, 9 2.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 4
 6 5 2
 A K 10 9 8
 8 4 3

Q: 4 - Your partner opens one club, you respond one diamond and he bids one heart. South in today's deal rebid two diamonds. Do you agree with that action?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1NT: At the table South bid 2 Diamonds. I wouldn't call that bid a clear error -- the diamond spots are robust -- but it did suggest a six-card suit. I believe most experts would choose a different action: perhaps 1NT. Note that in today's deal, 3NT is cold if North is declarer.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 6 5 3
 A J 8
  A J 7 2
 10 3

Q: 5 - Neither side vulnerable. The dealer, at your right, opens one heart. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
---1
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass (or Double): This is a matter of style and temperament. Many good players would willingly double for takeout, risking an unwelcome club response by partner. To act immediately might allow you to reach game and make it. I would pass, but I realize that there is no correct answer, only a winning and losing action. Such is bridge.
