Daily Bidding Questions by Frank Stewart

When Frank Stewart's "Daily Question" column was (and is still) published, each hand has a companion bidding question which is, or is not, related to the said hand.

With Vu-Bridge, best is to gather these questions as a quiz, for your enjoyment...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 7 2
 K 10 9 5 2
 K 7
 Q 8 7 3

Q: 1 - Your partner opens one diamond, you respond one heart and he bids one spade. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1NT: Although you have a weak hand, you can't afford to pass partner at one spade. Bid 1NT, showing seven to 10 points, probably with balanced pattern, possibly (as here) with values in the unbid suit. A bid of two clubs would be forcing and unlimited. A rebid of two hearts would suggest longer hearts.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 J 4
 K 10 8 7
 J 10 9 8 4
 A 7

Q: 2 - The dealer, at your left, opens one spade. Your partner doubles, and the next player passes. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1DblePass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Since your partner promises opening values or more with help for the unbid suits (or a strong hand with a suit of his own), you may have a game. Jump to three hearts to invite game in the most likely strain. If you respond as cheaply as possible, you will promise no values at all.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 8 4
 K Q J 10 5
 A 7 3
 A 6 2

Q: 3 - Your partner opens one spade, you respond two hearts and he raises to four hearts. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass4Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 5: Your partner suggests extra strength; with a minimum hand, he could have raised to three hearts. Since you have good trumps and side aces, a try for slam is in order -- you could raise to five hearts -- and a jump to six hearts would be reasonable. Partner may hold A K Q 7 6, A 7 4 2, J 5, 8 4.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 5
 J 10 7 5
 K J 2
 A 8 6 5

Q: 4 - Your partner opens one spade, you respond two clubs, he rebids two spades and you try 2NT. Partner next bids three diamonds. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
2 No-TrumpsPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Your partner suggests six spades, four diamonds and minimum opening values. If he had extra values, his second bid would have been two diamonds or three spades. Most of your values are ideal, hence jump to four spades. Partner's hand may be A J 9 6 4 2, 2, A Q 7 6, 9 3.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 8 3
 K 9 6
 A 5 4 2
 6 5 3

Q: 5 - Your partner opens one heart, and the next player overcalls two clubs. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: The hand contains one high-card point more than the theoretical upper limit for a single raise, but the flat pattern is a negative feature. Moreover, whatever club honors your partner has are badly positioned underneath the club bidder. Raise to two hearts. If partner tries for game, you will of course accept.
