"Be Kind to Editors and Writers" Month by Marti Ronemus

Imagine! A whole month dedicated to US! Those of us who toil endlessly with deadlines coming at us like bullets... Editors who have to cajole and threaten writers to PROOFREAD that copy FIRST... Writers who struggle to keep it fresh, not to mention accurate. And then there are our interactions with you, our Faithful Readers. We delight in your emails (even the woman who lectured me on my grammar). There are three sides to the triangle, and you are the base upon which it all rests. And here's to all the Editors and Writers out there. Wouldn't life be boring without us?

Today you get five non-boring bidding challenges, followed by a hand that looks impossible at first. Ready?

Question 1

 A Q 8 3
 A K 7 5 2
 A 9 3

Q: 1 - As South, your bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: With 17 HCP and a little extra for distribution, you've got plenty to reverse, showing a strong opening hand of mid- or max-strength. Quick refresher: A reverse, one of the few forcing bids opener can make, promises a) a nice 16-plus point hand, b) the first-named suit is longer than the second, c) It is a suit by-passed by responder, d) who should he want to return to the original suit, would have to jump a level. Perfect!

Question 2

 Q 10 2
 A K 8 5

Q: 2 - What is South's rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
111pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: This isn't easy. Had West not bid 1, your No-trumps bid would be an easy no-brainer. Now, you have to consider if your QT is enough of a stopper. In a perfect world... Another possible option is to raise Pard's Spades, knowing he has five of them. Then HE'D have to play it. Hmmmm

Question 3

 6
 K J 7 3
 A Q J 9 8
 J 5 3

Q: 3 - South says?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Another tough one. Bidding 1 No-trumps would suggest a more balanced hand. You've got nine cards in two suits and a singleton. That does NOT spell "No-trumps". You cannot bid the Hearts, as that would be a reverse and you don't have the money to buy one. However, rebidding the Diamonds promises a six-card suit. There's no good bid here, so tuck one of those Hearts in with your Diamonds, and lie away.

Question 4

 A Q 10 8 7
 A K 9 3

Q: 4 - What next for South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Whew. A bid that shows the hand, both shape and point count. You aren't quite strong enough to jump shift with this hand, although your K has picked up a little value. If you had a Heart stopper your rebid would be simple, but for now, show your "bottom heavy" hand.

Question 5

 Q 8 4
 A K 10

Q: 5 - South's bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
122pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: It might be a tiny bit of a risk, but let's not be cheap. You've got an 18 pt hand. Is this over-reaching? Can you make it? Will the defenders be snoozing? You get to play this hand now, from the defender's point of view. Good luck!
