"National Toilet Repair Day" by Marti Ronemus

We find ourselves a little confused by this holiday. Is "Toilet Repair" limited to once a year? Or is this just a good day to check the plumbing fixtures in our homes? The one thing we are sure of is that there are some things we cannot live without... and this day celebrates one of them.

Another thing we cannot live without is accurate bidding. (Did you wonder how we would tie this into our bidding quiz?) We have a nice quiz to "repair" your game, followed by our usual diabolical hand. Ready?

Question 1

 A J 6 5 4
 5
 10 7 6 4

Q: 1 - As South, what do you think?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Opener's bid, while encouraging, is not forcing. We are not very happy with our hand, and as we know, shortness in Pard's first bid suit makes for very leaky declarer play. We should avoid rebidding an unsupported five-card suit, plus the Hearts aren't outstanding enough to tempt us. We have a known seven-card fit in Spades, so let it go. North hasn't shown more than a max of a bad 16, so we shouldn't have game.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 6 5
 A J 7 4 3
 K Q 10 5
 J 2

Q: 2 - Same bidding sequence as last question, but a much different hand. What do you (South) say now?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: A jump in Pard's first bid suit guarantees an invitational hand of 10-12 pts and support. Since you bid the Hearts first, Pard should know your shape. With a fat 14 pts., and black stoppers, it's likely Pard will find a No-trump contract for us. Without a Club stopper, we shouldn't bid the No-trump first. We've jiggled the handle gently... it's up to Pard now. Notice ours is the first tightly limiting bid in the auction so far.

Question 3

Q: 3 - Same sequence one more time... as South, what do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
1pass1pass
??

 Your choice:
A: 4: We know we have game the minute Pard bids, and probably in Hearts. There is no need to rush, though. 3 would be just invitational, and that bid would need repair. There's no other rebid with this hand. Should be fun to play with this great shape.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A 9 6
 A Q 10
 Q 10 9 5
 10 7 4

Q: 4 - And South says...
SouthWestNorthEast
--1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trumps: This requires a little chat with Pard. Some play a jump to 2 No-trumps by responder at responder's first bid shows 10-12, others say 13-15. We're playing 13-15. Where do we come up with 13? This hand is "overflowing" with tens and nines. 1 No-trump would be a serious undervaluation. We thoroughly appreciate those "honorettes."

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A Q J 7 3
 A 9 5
 Q 8 2
 7 4

Q: 5 - How about your rebid as South on this one?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass2
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Pard has limited his hand to 6-9 pts. The most you can squeeze out of this hand is a skinny 14. Since even if Pard has 9, you don't have game, why would you consider anything but Pass?

And now you get to see if you've made the right decision. You're going to play this hand and see the wisdom or fallacy of your choice.
