"Use Less Stuff Day" by Marti Ronemus

This day was created by ecologists to help with recycling awareness. BUT! If ever there was a day for us bridge players, this is it. At our Bridge Boot Camps, players are always tugging on our sleeves "Oh, help me. If I could just play Reverse Drury (or some other convention) my game would be so much better." I tell them they need a new convention like Bullwinkle needs a hat rack. Most players don't use the conventions they already have properly, and they could REALLY improve their game by dumping half of them and focusing on the basics.

Today's quiz is all about the basics. Ready to do more with less?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 8 4
 K Q 9
 A K 8 5 4
 J 9

Q: 1 - You are South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--2pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Honestly, the convoluted conventions, point counts and "stuff" people use dealing with pre-empts. People, bridge is a game of TRICKS. When Pard preempts, his hand represents 5-1/2 tricks. Count YOUR tricks, add to 5-1/2 and place the contract. You've got three quick tricks, the ninth trump which is good for one trick, plus the two trump honors, good for another trick. That adds up to game. Simple, simple, simple.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 8
 K J 10 3 2
 8 4 3
 A Q J 2

Q: 2 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1dbl2
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: In favor of Hearts (and Pard's double promised four Hearts) you've got an opening-ish hand opposite Pard's opener. East's 2 raise is so weak, but They've got a big Spade fit. We need to smack 'em down now.

Question 3

 K 10 8
 A K Q 10
 K 8 7
 A K J

Q: 3 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--3pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 No-trumps: All you need from Pard is one ace. If you can't manage to wring a slam out of that, dump a few conventions and work on your play. Besides, you don't have to play this! Pard does.

Q: 4 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: No one has yet limited their hand. Pard didn't Jump Shift, so he probably doesn't have more than 16-ish, but let's put a lid on this. We've got our fit, now we show 6-9, limit our hand and make our problem our partner's.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 6 5 4 3
 K J 9
 A 7 6
 J 10

Q: 5 - Last chance. South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--3pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: With our Heart holding, we've got seven Heart tricks, plus the two aces. That's nine tricks. Surely we can find a way to develop one more? And besides, no contract is too high if your Pard has to play it.

Oops. We are about to play this hand, and it will be YOU, not Pard, who has to bring home the contract. Hmm. Have we over-reached?
