Surely most of us are old enough to remember the Pet Rock craze. Talk about much ado about nothing. When I saw this observance on our calendar, with a link yet, I must admit to being excited. Think of all the comparisons to bridge conventions I could make! The nostalgia I could bring in. Dreadful puns were appearing in my head full blown.

So, I clicked on the link to their website, and guess what? It's not PET ROCK day, it's pet ROCK DAY. It's a rock festival to raise funds for homeless pets. Huh. What do I do now?

Undeterred, I decided to switch my emphasis to bids that aren't what they appear to be... (admittedly, that would include MANY of mine).

We're in a competitive auction, and if Pard raised our suit, he'd be following The Law of Total Tricks and showing his number of trumps in a weak hand. The cuebid of the opponent's suit says, "I've got a fit and a more than minimum hand. What's your point count?"

With our minimum hand we need to make a minimum bid. 3♥ says we're between 12-14 pts. Now it's Pard's problem.

A: 2 No-trump: Give yourself credit for a bid that isn't on the list if you've got a special treatment for a game-going hand with a big fit with Pard. This particular bid is the Jacoby 2NT, and there are a number of replies to the 2NT bid. The point here is that there is no Spade bid that will describe this hand. Usually 2NT response to a major denies a fit. This is a special treatment worth your consideration. If you like it, look it up.
