"National Iguana Awareness Week" by Marti Ronemus

So, you're thinking about getting an Iguana as a pet? You might want to rethink that impulse.

70% of pet Iguanas die during their first year of ownership, due to lack of proper diet (talk about picky, picky, picky), not enough ultraviolet light and not enough warmth.

If you manage to keep them alive, they can grow to four feet (!) and after 5-10 years, they might actually develop an attachment to their owners. The good news is they can actually be housebroken. Who knew?

After spending some time on the website, I've decided that owning an Iguana is as much hard work as learning an entirely new bidding system.

Speaking of which... let's see how our bidding quiz goes today.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 9 4
 A 8 4 3 2
 8 4
 Q 7 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: With a minimum hand, and a huge trump fit, most would follow the Law of Total tricks, and raise immediately to 4. Some might only bid 3, but with East bidding God's Own Suit (Spades), 4 ensures our preemptive values.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 4
 K Q J 9 6 5
 A 10 7
 A Q 4

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1122
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Two factors help us think we can keep this Iguana alive: First, the vulnerability is in our favor. Secondly, and this is most important, our shape. Pard's raise in a competitive auction shows a weak hand with three card trump support. We've got a nine-card trump fit. Plus we've got that gorgeous singleton. Well worth a try.

Q: 3 - South?

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Even though this hand only has 13 high card points, it is rich in tricks and shape. Let's see what Pard thinks. Those who play Help Suit Game Try might well bid 3 with this hand.

 Your choice:
A: 3: At first glance this seems simple. BUT!! That Q may well be as useless to us as iceberg lettuce is to an Iguana. Because of our good trump holding, however, this seems a good bet.

**Negative double, showing at least 4-4 in the unbid suits, definitely the unbid major, probably the fourth suit and at least 7-ish points.

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: Not much else we can do. We've got a Spade stopper and a minimum opener.

So far so good. Let's see if we can keep the Iguana alive through a hand.
