National Caramel Month by Marti Ronemus

My Faithful Readers will assume that National Caramel Month will be one of celebration, rejoicing and indulgence for me. The sweet, gooey, chewy pleasure should put this right under Bacon Month and Bourbon Month, right?

Well, not exactly. All my life I've been (mis)guided by the following two mottos: "What can possibly go wrong?" and "How hard can it be?" So I decided to make my own caramel. I will skip the details, but three years later, I'm still finding spots that need to be scraped off the kitchen walls, even after the repainting.

I still shudder when I see a caramel.

And our bridge tie-in? No matter how delicious you think the reward is going to be, beware!!

And on to our quiz.

 A Q 10 8 4

Q: 1 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We have a couple options here. We can immediately eliminate any Heart bid, since raising your Pard's suit regardless of level shows a bad hand. We could bid 2, which would (in most partnership agreements) be forcing and an okay bid. BUT! We prefer cuebidding the opponent's suit. It promises 10-plus points and a fit with Pard. It asks the overcaller to further describe their hand. How hard can that be?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Partner cuebid, showing 10-plus points and a fit. He's asking us to further describe our hand. We need to tell Pard we've got a minimum overcall. Small hand, small bid. The pot will not explode.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We have a hand we would have opened with, a minimum one admittedly, but an opener nonetheless. We show Pard a 12-14 point hand. Pard can now Do the Math and place the contract.

 Your choice:
A: 4: We now have a hand that can make game opposite a Pard with 10-plus points. Our bid guarantees 15-17 points (add distribution because of our trump fit and we LOVE LOVE the A). Now it's Pard's problem.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: Double: Our hand is too big for an overcall. We will begin with a double. An overcall promises 7-ish to 17-ish points.

And now let's play our hand and see if we can get the caramel to boil over -- for the declarer!
