 "Miracle Cure-Alls" by Marti Ronemus

In 1830, John B. McMunn introduced his elixir of "purely vegetable" ingredients that "no family should be without." It "cures coughs, colds, quiets fussy babies, tetanus, rabies." It was also a brain tonic, and cure for hay fever, headaches and male impotency. It was so useful as an aid to endurance that Ernest Shackleton took it on his Antarctic expeditions. What was it? Pure opium. In reality, people weren't cured, but they were so stoned they just didn't care.

Are there any cure-alls in bridge? Yes. What is it? Thoughtful consideration.

A: 3: We need to take some action since both East and West appear to be weak. Pard did bid in the balancing seat, and may be light, but he does rate to have something nice. Let's encourage just a little.

Q: 2 - South:

1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: 2 would be too wimpy. Adding distribution points, we have 16, but we have some additional assets. We've got a great trump suit, and one of our favorite holdings, the A-J-10 of a suit, which 75% of the time results in two tricks. If we've been nipping at that Miracle Cure-All, we might risk 4, but 3 will be good enough.

 Your choice:
A: 5 No-trump: We are insisting on slam, but the 5 No-trump tells Pard to pick his own. With only two Hearts, he'll bid 6 No-trump. With three Hearts, it'll probably be 6. We don't care. Which ever it is, it's HIS problem!! No contract is too high (speaking of opium) if your Pard has to play it.

A: 1 No-trump: We'd like our Spade stopper to be a little more robust, but we meet minimum requirements, and there's no other option expect Pass. Not hardly.

A: Double: This time with exactly the same hand, we decide to make a Negative Double. That tells our whole story and leaves it up to Pard. Once again, we've succeeded in making our problem, his.

And now, on to our hand.
