"You Saw WHAT?!" by Marti Ronemus

Yes, it WAS a coyote! In New York City! Since the 1990s, coyotes have been living, breeding and getting a solid toe-hold in all the boroughs. The Park Service has been studying them to get a count, find out how they're related and what they're eating. Trail cameras help, but the best answers about the population come from studying their poop, known officially as "scat." What have they learned? (I'll skip the poop processing steps...)

The population is surprisingly diverse genetically, showing that outsiders are finding the local groups. They're shown to eat mostly small mammals, birds and fruit, rather than the expected garbage.

And they're here to stay. They are incredibly adaptable, and surprisingly good neighbors, as they keep the rodent population down. If you see one? Keep a little distance, don't feed them, and enjoy that rare special opportunity. And you might want to keep that Chihuahua on a leash!

Meantime, let's act like opportunistic coyotes, and find perfect bids.

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pathetic. We only have 7 working pts., and sadly are forced to bid. Pass is not an option. Pard is rated for some strength, and we are alerting him to our weakness with our sad little expression as well as our sad little bid. There's a possibility we might only have a seven-card fit, but that's not our problem!

A: 4: This time, we've got a little more to offer. We are assured of an eight-card fit, and our honors are much more likely to be working honors.

Q: 3 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: We can squeak out a game bid, but which suit? Pard might well be 4-3 in the majors. By cuebidding the opponent's suit, we're asking Pard to pick his own suit. A nice, adaptable coyote bid.

Q: 4 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: While a case can be made for a double, consider this: Pard had an opportunity to double or overcall, but he passed. Yes, he may have values, but are they in our suits? And what appears to be a 14 pt hand is really only 10 pts. This hand is likely to be better on defense. Let's Pass and give Pard an opportunity again. The auction isn't over yet.

Q: 5 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 1: Don't be seduced by the presence of the sixth Spade. This hand should not be Weak Jump Shifted. The suit is too lousy. Were we to bid 2, we would be promising the same quality suit as if we opened 2. Some might Pass this hand, but not us. We like the Spade overcall.

And on to our hand.
