"Holding Out Hope" by Marti Ronemus

It's the day after Christmas, the second day of Chanukah and the first day of Kwanzaa. We're exhausted from the holidays already and see the Winter doldrums looming. BUT! We bring HOPE! It won't be long till Spring, and as a little foretaste of what's to come, we bring you some Baseball facts.

Back in 1859, William Chadsworth revealed what became a sports staple, the baseball box score, where the results of an "at bat" are shown in boxes. A single was "S," a double "D," a triple "T." What about a strike out? He used "K" since S was taken, and started a system that endured over 150 years.

That may not sound like much, but for those trapped in mid-Winter blues, it at least moves our minds forward.

Speaking of forward, we need to make some decisions on moving the auction forward. Ready?

 9 8 7 6
 K 10 6 5 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1 No-trump2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Pard's 2 bid is conventional, showing at least 5-4 in the majors. This hand promises to be a horrible Crummy Dummy unless we get to name the trump suit. Our Pard is going to have a fit when he hears our Pass, but when our hand hits the table, he'll recover.

A: 3: We know Pard is 5-4. We need to send two messages: our Spade fit and our invitational hand. Our bid is perfect.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Our jump to game tells Pard we have trump support, but no hope of slam. It's a red flag telling Pard to proceed at his own risk.

Q: 4 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Unlike last hand, not only do we have a trump fit but slam interest. We tell Pard by counter-intuitively bidding lower. We are giving Pard lots of room to find the perfect contract. It's his problem now. Let's see how he rounds the bases.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We have enough points to go to game when we include our distribution point. BUT!! We sadly lack intermediates or honorettes, and we've got no real source of tricks to offer Pard. Let's play it safe.

And now our hand....
