"We're So Bored!" by Marti Ronemus

Late Winter carries a certain hysteria with it. It's a combination of desperation, boredom, cabin fever and yearning. This hysteria has resulted in, at one extreme end of the spectrum, murder, mayhem, suicide, heavy drinking. At the other end of the spectrum we get strange, strangely desperate acts of creativity.

Such as: in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, as part of their Winter festival there's the (are you ready?) International Hair Freezing Contest. Yup, you read that right. People hop into the local hot spring to get all wet, then mold and shape their hair (and beards) into bizarre shapes as it freezes. Pictures are taken, judging occurs and prizes are awarded. Want to enter? Get tips from winners? See pictures of winners? takhinihotpools.com/hair_freezing is where to go.

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Dbl2
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Yes, Pard has four Hearts and an opening-ish hand, but this is too good a situation to pass up. We can't penalty double, and we really shouldn't bid No-trump. Visualize Pard's hand. He's gotta be void in Diamonds, right? He will most likely double again, and we'll convert to penalty.

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: Pard, with a minimum hand, could have raised our Hearts with only three pieces. Our Hearts are so dreadful, and we've got very nice cards in the other suits. We'd rather only need nine tricks.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Here's the thing... we think this hand will win the Frozen Hair contest. There's some serious slam potential. Why not stimulate one more round of bidding by showing our outstanding Diamonds? It's possible we have a Diamond slam. Can't wait to hear from Pard.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Why not? We need some excitement to ameliorate the boredom. If the opponents bid further, Pard will at least know if a sacrifice is worth it.

We're ready for our hand.
