 "Outstanding News!" by Marti Ronemus

Most bridge players seem to also be passionate readers. So many books, so little time, right? Well, how about this for great news?

Many libraries are eliminating late fees! At first glance, it might seem this would cause crazed anarchy, but amazingly 95% of books are still returned on time.

The outstanding advantage is that it has increased library usage by disadvantaged kids by 61%! (Are you loving these statistics from the National Library Association?) Is this important? I'll say. If a kid isn't reading at grade level by third grade, their is a more-than-50% chance they won't graduate. Getting those kids into the library without fear of fines is one of those changes that make a big difference.

Sort of like getting the contract off to a great start with excellent bidding. Today's quiz finds us trying to decide what to do opposite a passed Pard.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 3 2
 A Q 10 9
 K Q 9 3
 A J 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass2
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: We're forcing Pard to leap to the three-level after he already passed. While a Pass in the overcall seat doesn't mean he's broke, just that he can't overcall or double himself, it is a caution. We've got an invitational hand which is good, and we absolutely have the other major covered. Our only reluctance is if Pard comes back in Clubs. We can't pass!

 Your choice:
A: Double: We're still going to double even though we're a bit light on points. The singleton Spade makes the difference, plus the strong tolerance for Clubs. We are safe checking this book out.

A: Double: We have fingers crossed that Pard is holding four Spades and will bid 2. If you passed this question, give yourself credit also. Many would pass this, especially if Vulnerable. We're feeling lucky today though. Our books are all back in time.
