Leads against a slam by Matthias Huberschwiller

You are going to lead against a slam!

You only need two tricks to defeat it.

How will it change your leads?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K 9 6 2
 A 3 2
 10 9 6
 7 6 2

Q: 1 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
4Pass4 NTPass
5Pass6Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - What will declarer's plan be to win his contract?
He will use dummy's Clubs in order to discard his losers after having lost the A.
Therefore, you need to establish a trick as long as you still hold the A, and your best chance is in Spades.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 9 8 7
 10 6 2
 Q 9 6 2
 J 6 4

Q: 2 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass6 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 - This No-trumps slam is purely based on strength therefore you need to find a neutral lead: you don't want to give a trick away.

The minors look too dangerous, so you need to lead from a major. The lead from a 10 third could be deadly if partner has the Queen and dummy K-J-x and declarer A-9-x. Top of nothing from your sequence in Spades is much safer.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q J 6
 9 3 2
 10 9 4 2
 J 4 2

Q: 3 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2 NT *Pass
4 NTPass5Pass
6PassPassPass

* 2NT = Four-card fit, 13-15.

 Your choice:
A: 2 - Here, you don't have the faintest idea about declarer's possible plan because all you know about opponents' hands is that they have a fit.
You could lead from your sequence in Spades, but if dummy has K-10 and declarer the Ace, this could be fatal.
Could your parter have the A and dummy the King for two tricks in the suit? If your opponents are serious, no. South's Blackwood inquiry promises all the controls.

When in doubt, it is better to lead neutrally; a small trump.

Question 4

 J 9 5 2
 J 10 9 6 2

Q: 4 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast

3Pass4 NTPass

 Your choice:
A: J - Leading your singleton is tempting, but you have an almost certain trump trick.
Therefore it is better to lead elsewhere, and the sequence in Diamonds looks the least dangerous.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 6 4 2
 6 2
 7 2
 9 6 5 3 2

Q: 5 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
4 NTPass5Pass
6PassPassDouble
PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 - Your partner has doubled a slam; this is a Lightner double. He asks you for a special lead.

Here, dummy has shown length in Clubs and you have five of them! Chances are high that your partner has a void.

What card should you lead? You want a Spade return, so you need to lead your highest card as suit preference.
