Leads after Preempts by Matthias Huberschwiller

When someone makes a pre-empt, they give away a good image of their hand.

A pre-empt will often help you with your lead, since you have a pretty good idea of what they have.

Good luck.

 K 8 6 2
 A 6 3 2
 J 8 6 2

Q: 1 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
3Pass4Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - Since South has a weak hand, nearly all the opposing side's strength is in dummy. Therefore you need to make an active lead, to set up tricks. You should lead your fourth-best Heart.

Should you lead Clubs, declarer might use the Clubs in dummy to discard his losers.

Question 2

 7 2
 Q 6 2
 A 9 6 2

Q: 2 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass4Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - This time it is North, the dummy, who has made a pre-emptive bid. He has shown five Hearts and a weak hand.

Therefore you must not underlead an honor, since you might be leading into one of South's tenaces.

You'd better lead a trump. This will give nothing away and you can just wait for declarer's finesses to fail.

Q: 3 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
144Double
PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: A - Your partner has Doubled. He must have defensive tricks and not many Hearts. You need to cash the A before South can discard his losers in the suit. And maybe you'll be able to give your partner a ruff on the second round.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q J 10 9 8
 K 6
 A 6 2
 8 4 2

Q: 4 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
3 NTPassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: A - South has made a Gambling bid, showing a solid minor and nothing else.

You need to lead the Ace of Diamonds, to look at dummy and see where you tricks might come from.

If you lead a Spade and dummy goes down with the Ace-King of Spades and nothing in Hearts or Diamonds, declarer will make nine tricks when he could have gone down a lot.

 J 10 8 2

Q: 5 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
3PassPassDouble
PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: J - You made a good pass after the take/out double. They will go down a lot.

You need to lead your Club sequence. There is no point in leading your singleton when you have three natural trump tricks.
