New Year’s Resolutions: Really?!”
Why do I even bother? On what planet will I REALLY give up chocolate, stop making snarky remarks about politics, lose weight, get my car washed once a month, put dishes in the dishwasher immediately and turn articles in way ahead of deadline? Who am I kidding? (Certainly no one who knows me.)
And don’t look so superior. You know you’ve already broken most of your resolutions, and it’s only the 10th. All our good intentions down the tubes. BUT!! It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s not too late to make some NEW resolutions for this year. And we can start where it really matters – our bridge.
We don’t have to do this alone. In this issue we bring you solid help in our Bridge Improvement resolutions.
Let’s start with DAVID BIRD. After playing these hands, we resolve to: Discern between when we should and shouldn’t overruff; Use the example of champions to improve our own games; Help Pard “get it right” with proper signaling, and know when to discourage even when holding winners.
Next, BEN NORTON helps us slide into the New Year. He gives us six hands, all featuring the same concept: Entry Management! After playing these hands and grasping the techniques, we won’t find ourselves stranded on the wrong side of the table so often. And that’s a good thing.
PAUL BOWYER rings in 2017 with a single-theme series also. Paul is a master at helping the less experienced player clearly see the how’s and why’s of planning. This series is about how to read the cards when setting up a long suit against 3NT and to know when to duck to preserve communications.
And then, MATTHIAS HUBERSCHWILLER brings us two quizzes on a topic especially near and dear to my, er, heart. The Sacrifice!! My Faithful Readers know that I hold the dubious honor of being the Queen of the Phantom Sacrifice. I will be paying special attention to these quizzes, and my advice is for you to do the same. I’m eager to give up my championship, so those of you who don’t take these quizzes may well take over for me.
Finally, I have two little warm-up hands for you that might give you an idea or two.
So let’s get going! And here’s some chocolate to “nourish” us while we play.
