MARCH MADNESS – IN THE BRIDGE WORLD
“March Madness” isn’t just about basketball. It refers to the whole month, the most dangerous month of the year. We’re eager for Spring, have had all we can stand of Winter, and are slightly crazed with anticipation for St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We dress for the supposed 56 degrees, and end up in a snow squall. Beware!
Especially beware of the hands we bring to you. If you are the declarer, you are in deep snowdrifts.
DAVID BIRD is downright dangerous… to the declarers! Want to know what card to discard, which ones to hold? A simple but deadly technique guaranteed to have them grinding their teeth? When should we persist with a suit and when should we switch? Can we exhaust the declarer? How about a technique that seems strange at first but will become habit? Start playing!
BEN NORTON devotes all six of his hands to the mayhem of Suit Preference signals. He shows us six occasions when the card we play enables Pard to know what’s in his hand as clearly as if we could see through them. Suit Preference can seem a bit of a challenge, and it is, but with Ben’s guidance, we’ll see our way through.
PAUL BOWYER also has a single-subject series for us. He’s got eight hands on The Rule of 11. For those to whom this is new, prepare to be excited. This is a simple (well…) way of locating cards. Paul shows several different ways it can be used, then takes us to another level when he shows how it can be used by the Declarer just as well as the defenders.
And two quizzes! MATTHIAS HUBERSCHWILLER helps clear the fog on choosing the suit you want to lead, and which card to lead.
Lastly, I’ve got two warm-up hands for you on surviving March Madness.
