Summer Reading
We bridge players are also, in large numbers, passionate readers. Many belong to at least one book club, often two. And July is the time for us! More books are sold in July than any time of year save the holidays. We tote them to the beach, on planes and ships as we enjoy our vacations. Mysteries, romances, biographies, we love them all. All the new releases! One hardly knows where to begin.
But before we crack that spine (or turn on our eReaders), we want to make sure we keep up on our bridge reading. After all, we do have our priorities straight, don’t we?
DAVID BIRD, who never fails us, starts off our Summer reading with a sure number-one hit. Some chapter headings: Resist Temptation, Avoid the Obvious (see the big picture), Benefit from Declarer Errors, Read the Lead, Inspired Third-Hand Play, and Don’t Cover that Card! DAVID’S sample hands clearly demonstrate his principles.
BEN NORTON has a best-seller with his “Between the Covers,” six hands. He has a central theme for us – All About “When to Cover.” We’ve all read that old, old book “Cover an Honor with an Honor,” but BEN wants us to know the real scoop. His hands help us see clearly how to THINK through the cover problem by visualizing various outcomes.
PAUL BOWYER presents us with the hottest Mystery of the summer, with his eight hands on finding clues in the cards to tell us whether to persist in the suit Pard let, or to switch to another. PAUL’s focus is on reading the cards, but perhaps more importantly on how every card we play on defense carries a message. If you pay attention, you can solve the mystery.
MATTHIAS HUBERSCHWILLER brings two quizzes for our book bag. The first is on leading your own suit or not. The second one is on when to lead your partner's suit. That will please your favorite partner.
And for a quick warm-up, I’ve got two hands on placing cards, one from the opening leader’s point of view, and one from third hand.
After reading this list of Best Sellers, we’ll be way ahead of the game, if you forgive the pun.
