Welcome to the seventeenth edition of V-Blue, the interactive magazine for those learning the fascinating game of bridge.
In this issue there are three series for you to enjoy. Two series (of six hands each) are on Finesses. This is one of the most important areas of card-play in bridge and it crops up a lot in the game. In the last edition of V-Blue we looked at the marked finesse – a position where the location of the opponents’ cards were known to you. Here we are in the dark and have to rely on hope. With a finesse we hope that a critical card lies with one particular opponent and not the other. All finesses are in the nature of a 50-50 proposition; either your hopes will be fulfilled or they will be dashed. You win some, you lose some – it’s all part of the game.
When you have absorbed the important lessons here you may care to try out our “General Series” of eight assorted deals. These are designed for you to see what you have gained from previous editions of VuBridge. You can’t improve at this game without lots of practice and these deals give you plenty of opportunity for that.
Finally, you might like to try out the quiz. This is all about opening 2NT, a bid which is designed to show a strong balanced hand. There’s a lot of tasty material here – tuck in!
Series #2450 - The Finesse - Part I (ACOL)
This set of six deals is all about the finesse, a common but very important play in bridge. In the last edition of V-Blue we looked at the marked finesse (when you know how the cards lie). Here we are looking at deals where you don't know how the opponents' cards are arranged – you just have to hope that they lie in a certain way. That's in the nature of a finesse.
We'll start with a definition.
Tenace: Two cards of the same suit of which one ranks two degrees lower than the other.
Vu-Bridge Quiz: Opening 2NT
In this edition we are looking at how to bid big hands. What do you do when - all by yourself - you hold 20 (or more) points?

Series #2451 - The Finesse - Part II (ACOL)
This series continues the theme of finesses, but with slightly harder examples.
You should remember what a tenace is and that you should always lead towards one rather than lead away from one.
Here are eight general practice hands on the themes that we have been looking at in VuBridge. They are in no particular order, just enjoy them as they come...
