Editorial by Paul Bowyer
Welcome to the twenty-first edition of V-Blue, the interactive magazine for those learning the fascinating game of bridge.
In this issue there are, as usual, three series for you to savor. Two series (of six hands each) are on Ducking. This is an important area of card-play in bridge, which crops up many times. We frequently have to develop long suits (mostly in No-trumps) and often we have to lose tricks in order to set them up. Well, often the best way of losing those tricks is to lose them early in the piece rather than later. When you play these deals you will see what we mean and understand what to duck a trick means.
When you have absorbed the important lessons here you may care to try out our “General Series” of eight assorted deals. These are designed for you to see what you have gained from previous editions of VuBridge. These deals are usually randomly arranged but here they come in pairs, with even numbered deals being connected to the odd numbered hands. Intrigued? Well, best get on and find out what those deals are all about!
Finally, you might like to try out the quiz. This is all about the take-out Double – when you should enter the auction and when you shouldn’t. There’s a lot of tasty material here – tuck in!
Series #2555 - Declarer. Ducking to set up a side-suit - Part I (ACOL)
This set of six deals (and its counterpart elsewhere in this edition of V-Blue) covers the theme of ducking to establish a long suit. This play is usually made in No-trumps and is a way of retaining communication between the closed hand and dummy.
It is often the right play at this game to allow the opposition to take their tricks(s) early in the piece rather than later in the hand. This way you keep control of matters.
Vu-Bridge Quiz: The Take-out Double
When the opponents open the bidding it can be difficult to join in the fun and bid. To overcall you should have a good suit - the more so if you are entering the fray at the two-level.
One way of getting involved is via a take-out Double

Series #2556 - Declarer. Ducking to set up a side-suit - Part II (ACOL version)
This set of deals continues the theme about ducking to establish a long suit.
Here are eight general practice hands on the themes that we have been looking at in Vu-Bridge. They are in no particular order, just enjoy them as they come.
