Editorial by Paul Bowyer
Welcome to V-Blue, the e-magazine for those new to the wonderful game of bridge. This is the third edition of the magazine designed for beginners. The clever software puts you in the “hot-seat” at the table and is designed to help you learn and improve your card-playing skills.
Here at VuBridge we know how difficult it is to pick up the skills of card-play, especially when you are away from the learning environment of a classroom. Here we provide you with expert tuition via an electronic teacher forever by your side, giving you helpful hints and tips about what to do next. You can’t go wrong when you learn with VuBridge!
In this edition there are three series for you to try. Two of these series are linked and focus on opening 1NT and responding with weak unbalanced hands. Have you heard of the terms “weakness take-out”, “sign-off”, “shut-up bids”? No? Well, you will become familiar with these concepts as you work your way through our two six-hand series. When you open 1NT you are making your partner “boss of the auction” as you have made a limit bid. When you are boss of the auction you need to exert your authority! Our final series is a “general” series of eight hands looking at ideas that you should have met earlier in your nascent bridge careers. Certainly we have looked at these ideas in the first two editions of VuBridge. You will become declarer in No-trumps and have to play the cards carefully, often knowing when and how to drive out the opponents’ high cards.
There are 20 deals for you to get your teeth into – bon appetite. Oh, and don’t forget to look at the quiz as well!
Series #2084 - Weakness Takeout of 1NT - Part I (ACOL)
Bidding accurately opposite a take-out Double is fairly simple. The "rule" is not to make the same bid on very different hands. Partners are delicate flowers and they need careful nurturing...
Responding to 1 No-trump opening with a weak hand. You should take this quiz out before playing the hands...

Series #2085 - Weakness Takeout of 1NT - Part II (ACOL)
This set of six deals is a further introduction to VuBridge and continues to focus on the opening bid of 1NT.
In general style (also known as Standard American) this opening bid promises a balanced hand of 15-17 points. In this context "balanced" means a hand with a suit pattern of 4∙3∙3∙3 or 4∙4∙3∙2 or even 5∙3∙3∙2.
A set of 8 beginners' hands for VB#3 that are all about setting up suits by knocking out Aces and playing high cards from shortage.
