Welcome to the eleventh edition of V-Blue, the interactive magazine for those learning the wonderful game of bridge.
In this issue there are three excellent and absorbing series for you to appreciate. Two series (of six hands each) are on Opening bids and minimum rebids. There are all sorts of issues that are raised here, about how to raise partner’s suit, when to stop bidding, when to bid your own suit twice and more. Especially we focus (in the second series, anyway) on how to kill the auction with a poor hand. This is known as giving preference and there are few weaker bids at bridge.
Of course, bridge hands don’t stop when the auction closes. The play part has some added spice, just so your palettes are not too jaded. Some of the hands may be easy enough and some just a little tastier.
When you have absorbed the lessons here you may care to try out our “General Series” of eight assorted deals. These are designed for you to see what you have gained from previous editions of VuBridge.
You can’t make gains at this game without lots of practice and these deals give you plenty of opportunity for that.
Finally, you might like to try out the quiz. This is all about simple suit responses to an opening bid. Too easy? Maybe. And then again, maybe not... Why not test yourself and find out?
Series #2294 - Opening bids and minimum rebids - Part I (SA)
This set of six deals (part one of two) is concerned with opening bids and rebids on minimum hands. Sometimes you will be the opening bidder and sometimes the responder.
Vu-Bridge Quiz: Responding to an opening bid
The opening bid of one-of-a-suit is a very ill-defined bid. Basically speaking opening 1♣, 1♦, 1♥ or 1♠ shows roughly 12-19 points and that's about all the information you have. So the early rounds of the auction are a conversation between the opener and the responder, each trying to convey as much information as they can using the very limited vocabulary of the game.

Series #2295 - Opening bids and minimum rebids - Part II (SA version)
This set of six deals (part two of two) continues the theme of opening bids and rebids on minimum hands but focuses on the powerful and important idea of giving preference.
This is the essential means of attempting to kill the auction with a weak responding hand.
Here are eight general practice hands on the themes that we have been looking at in VuBridge. They are in no particular order, just enjoy them as they come...
