Editorial by Paul Bowyer
Welcome to V-Blue, the e-magazine for those learning the wonderful game of bridge.
In this edition (issue number 4) we are looking at percentage plays. Don’t worry, this isn’t a dull mathematics lesson from school (at least, we don’t think so). We have no desire to blind you with figures, we are just trying to get you familiar with the best plays in constantly recurring positions.
There are (as ever) two series on the same topic. The first series is straightforward (well, nearly!). However, we have to confess that the second series may just “exercise those little grey cells” (© Hercule Poirot). These hands are tantalizing but by no means impossible.
Anyway, as ever, VuBridge will be by your shoulder, helping and hinting and making sure you are on the right path.
When you have worked your way through these puzzles you may like to try the “General Series” of eight assorted hands. There’s no theme and the level of difficulty varies from deal to deal. That’s as it should be of course – when you are sitting at the table no one tells you that, “This hand is the hard one”, do they? We also have a quiz for you to enjoy. Ten questions on responding to pre-emptive opening bids.
Good hunting and good luck.
Series #2103 - Percentage plays - Part I (ACOL version)
This set of deals is about "Percentage plays"; that is - what is the best way to handle certain card combinations?
Success cannot be guaranteed but you have to give yourself the best chance.
Responses to opening three and four-bids Quiz by Andy Hung
In the last quiz (V-Blue Issue 3), we looked at how and when it was the right time to open a pre-emptive three-or-four level opening bid. For example, a pre-emptive 3♠ opening would show 6-10 points with (at least) a seven-card suit. Factors that determine a pre-empt were suit quality, vulnerability, and hand distribution.
In this quiz, we will be looking at how to respond to pre-empts because they are equally as important as the pre-empt itself. Sometimes even with a good hand, you might be forced to Pass partner's pre-emptive opening bid! Just remember, when responding to a pre-empt, rather than looking and judging your hand based on your high-cards, you should instead be looking at how many tricks you can provide partner.

Series #2104 - Percentage plays - Part II (ACOL version)
This set of deals continues the theme of "Percentage plays"; that is - what is the best way to handle certain card combinations?
You have to give yourself the best chance when faced with various card combinations.
Beware, though - these deals are tricky and need careful thought. You have been warned!
