Editorial by Paul Bowyer
Welcome to V-Blue, the e-magazine that aims to teach you the finer arts of the world’s most popular card game.
This edition (aimed at players who have been learning the game for a year or so) contains four series for you this time.
Two series are linked, each of six deals. Here we look at the take-out Double. It is a concept that you should have met before in your earlier bridge learning so we are following it up, polishing it up and knocking off the rough edges. The deals show you how you should respond to a take-out Double, when you should keep the bidding low and when you should jump the bidding to a high level. Easy? Maybe.... but then you’ll still have the problem of playing the resultant contract. Or perhaps that should read, “then you’ll still have the pleasure of playing the resultant contract.”
Our famous guest author from England – David Bird – provides six testing deals for you to puzzle over, which may cause you to use your “little grey cells”.
Finally there are four deals provided by the editor, just to ensure that you aren’t getting short-changed with the number of deals.
Oh yes, before I forget – there’s a quiz as well, on which you can test yourselves and your bidding knowledge.
There’s plenty here for all. Enjoy!

3 and 4 of a suit openings quiz by Andy Hung
In this section, we will be looking at opening three and four-level bids which are purely weak (about 6-10 points) and preemptive in nature. Important factors such as suit quality, vulnerability, and hand distribution should all be considered in judging whether a hand is suitable for a preemptive bid or not.
Preempts at the 3-level usually delivers a 7-card suit, and likewise at the 4-level it usually delivers an 8-card suit.
