Welcome to the twenty-third and penultimate edition of VuBridge Expert Kit. In this issue and the next, the final edition, we are providing you with real-life deals that were played at the table by experts. The hands range from far and wide as do the players, some from the golden age of bridge (generally reckoned to be the1930s) through to the modern days. Some of the players here have long departed us but their memories linger on and should not be forgotten. Some are very much still with us and are still winning trophies. Sit yourself down and see if you can find the declarer-plays and defenses that these masters did.

The third series of eight deals in this issue is, as ever, all about counting the hand. These hands, written by our talented young star Ben Norton, focus on different forms of this essential skill. Sometimes you have to count points, sometimes hand patterns. Opponents’ bidding (or lack of) may point the way to success and resolve a difficult guess Try to work out who has what from the clues you are given.

The list of such players ranges far and wide, from those who lived through the golden age of bridge (in the 1930s) through to modern players who are still going strong.
