 What to lead when partner bids a suit by Linda J Green

What do you lead when partner overcalls a suit?

Partner overcalls a suit usually for a lead and not necessarily to buy the contract, promising at least two of the top 3 honors.

Does partner show a weak hand by preempting at a higher level or bidding at a low level as lead directing?

 Your choice:
A: 3. When partner overcalls a suit it is usually a lead directing suit promising at least 2 of the top four honors. We lead a low card which gives our partner the count showing at least 3 or 4 cards in the suit. Partner needs to know how many cards in declarer's hand.
It does not promise an honor.

 Your choice:
A: 8. When we support our partner in the overcalled suit and we do not have an honor it is best to lead the top card in the suit. Partner is aware that one has 3 or more cards in the suit.

* 6-card suit weak.

 Your choice:
A: A. When one has an outside AK in a suit it is best to lead the Ace from AK first to show partner where your values are. Also it allows one to look at the dummy and see whether a spade lead would be advantageous. When partner makes a weak-jump overcall partner may be short and could get a diamond ruff. Timing is essential. So do not always lead partner's overcalled suit if you can have a look at the dummy with 2 touching outside cards AK.

 Your choice:
A: K. When you have a weak hand, lead the honor in case you need to switch to another suit. If you lead low, you may never get in again! The fact that they went to the 6-level shows that they most probably have a singleton or a void in the overcalled suit.

 Your choice:
A: A. When partner overcalls a suit we cannot lead away from an Ace in case declarer could have a singleton honor or King. It may cost a trick if partner overcalled on QJ987. That is a rare occasion. Put that Ace on the table. Should one hold any other honor with 3 cards we would lead low. But NOT away from an Ace!!
