 Decisions - decisions! by Linda J Green

There are many times when we have decisions as to which suit and which card to lead. Listening to the bidding is our guideline.

Did the opponents show shape? Did they show 9 or 10 cards in two suits? Did they deny a 4-card major? Is there one unbid suit or two unbid suits? Hopefully we can make a decision without fumbling at the bridge table.

Q: 1 - As South which card do you lead?

 Your choice:
A: K. Leading from a better suit shows partner where you may regain a lead for a quick trick. Leading from a Jack sequence although it is more solid suit, there are 3 missing honors, it will take a longer time to get extra tricks. Timing is everything.

 Your choice:
A: 4. When the opponents show 2 suits, they settle in the second suit and you have length in their 1st suit, a trump lead is mandatory. The responder is rated to be short in the 1st suit, hearts. One must try to stop them crossruffing the hand by playing a trump at every opportunity.

 Your choice:
A: A. As they settled in the 3rd suit it is customary to lead a trump when one is long in the 1st bid suit. However, holding an outside AK of an unbid suit looks far more attractive to be able to take a look at dummy first. Thereafter one can decide what to do next.

* Invitational = 6-card suit 15/16 HCP

 Your choice:
A: K. When we have a choice of 3 unbid suits it is best to lead from our better suit, diamonds. Although responder denied a 4-card spade suit we are hoping to regain the lead with the K and thereafter cashing a diamond trick first will allow one to then play the Q if required by dummy.

* Transfer to spades.

 Your choice:
A: K. No decision this time! As partner did not double the transfer bid of 2 which is an artificial bid- the lead of the club suit shows partner where you have better values. We do not lead doubletons unless partner bids the suit.
