Do you always lead your partner's suit? by Linda Green

When partner opens the bidding or overcalls do you always lead your partner's suit?

There are many opportunities to tell partner more about your hand and not blindly lead partner's suit!

We were told if you do not lead partner's suit get a new bridge partner! Not so, there are many exceptions to the rule.

 Your choice:
A: Ace - When one holds an outside Ace and King it is our duty to tell our partner who overcalled where our values are first!
This allows us to look at dummy and decide where to direct the game from there.
Sometimes dummy may hold a singleton Ace in partner's overcalled suit and now one may be able to give partner a ruff in the heart suit.

* Negative, shows 6hcp or more and a 4-card Heart suit. If a 5-card suit, not enough HCP to bid at the 2-level.
** Preemptive with 4 trumps and weak to block out the opponents.

 Your choice:
A: K - Show partner where your values are by leading the top of a sequence. When two cards are touching we lead the top.
Partner does not guarantee clubs in North America and may open on a 3-card suit as it is standard, when one does not hold a 5-card major.

 Your choice:
A: 7 - Usually when partner opens a suit and one does not hold a sequence, we lead partner's suit. However, if one leads another suit which is not a sequence, take it to be a singleton!
Having an entry - hopefully with the K one can now switch to opener's suit to get a ruff in the heart suit. Even without an entry in trumps partner may get in first either with a trump or the Ace to give one a ruff.

 Your choice:
A: 2 - When partner opens an auction, partner has the entries to develop the suit. It is our duty to lead the lowest card to show length 3 or 4 cards. Leading the top card partner will think one has a doubleton or singleton.
Showing the count for partner is very important to know how many cards declarer holds in the heart suit. This does not promise an honor! Having no entries for the spade suit, Xmas will come before one can set up that suit!

 Your choice:
A: 9 - When one supports partner in a suit and one does not hold an honor the lead of the top card shows no honor. Opener is aware that to support the suit there are 3 or 4 cards. Conversely, with an honor one would lead low to show an honor.
