Opening leads when no suit has been bid by linda j green

When no suit has been mentioned in a No Trump contract, we have not got many clues as to what to lead. Firstly, we add up our High Card points to declarer's and dummy's HCP, and calculate whether partner has anything at all.

If we have not much in high card points, we need to find our partner with something instead, by leading short suits.

Q: 1 - As South what suit do you lead?

 Your choice:
A: Q - When responder did not use Stayman looking for a 4-card major, a major suit should be led. It is safer to lead from a sequence than from an AQ, which may give declarer an extra trick. When one card is missing, the Ten, this is called a broken sequence. Always lead the top card.

 Your choice:
A: Q - Top of a broken sequence is far better, as the ace of hearts is an entry for the long diamond suit.
Remember :
When one card is missing either QJ96 ( ten missing ) or J1086 (nine missing) lead the top card as this is called a sequence.

 Your choice:
A: 9 - When one has very few points, it is best to lead your short major, in anticipation to find partner's length, who will hold the remainder of the high card points. Leading a long suit, spades, with no entry is a waste of time, as Xmas will come before one can set up that suit!

 Your choice:
A: J -A major is necessary as they did not use Stayman. As there is no 5-card suit to establish, lead the safest J, and hopefully when partner regains the lead will switch to the weaker suit in dummy, hearts, and hopefully get 4 heart tricks to defeat the contract.
Leading from a 4-card heart suit will not defeat the contract if partner gains the lead plus 3 tricks.
