 Must I lead partner's overcalled suit? by linda j green

Are you obliged to lead partner's overcalled suit? Our partner overcalls for a lead, promising two of the top 4 honors in the suit. Partner does not expect to buy the contract, and wishes to take away the bidding space from the opponent.
Should we lead partner's overcalled suit? There are extenuating circumstances not to lead the suit:
1. You have an establishable suit and a guaranteed entry.
2. You have too many high card points, and a singleton in partner's overcalled suit.
3. Partner made a weak jump overcall not necessarily lead directing as partner was in 3rd position (Anything goes!).

* Weak- jump overcall - 6-card suit.

** Shows a long running minor ( club suit) and has nine tricks expecting a trick from partner in hearts and promises a spade stopper.

 Your choice:
A: 4. When partner shows a weak- jump overcall leading a singleton is not an option as partner is rated to have no entry. Having the K as an entry- leading the longest unbid suit in anticipation to set up the diamond suit is the way to go!

* New suit is forcing by responder.

 Your choice:
A: 2. When partner overcalls a suit at the 2-level asking for the lead and you have 3 cards in the suit, lead your lowest card to show the count ( 3 or 4 cards). This does not promise an honor. Leading high partner will think you have a doubleton. LHO did not have a club stopper . RHO was forced to show a stopper in partner's overcalled suit - therefore try and set up partner's suit especially having the Queen of diamonds as an entry.

* Stayman - asks for a 4-card major

 Your choice:
A: 9. Declarer denied a 4-card spade and a 4-card heart suit by passing- once there was an interfering bid with an overcall by partner. Responder is rated to have a 4-card spade suit. Responder could have doubled your partner for penalties if holding a 4-card heart suit.
Leading partner's suit is mandatory in this instance. Why would your partner come into the auction at the 2-level after a Stayman enquiry? Partner has to have a good 6-card suit. Lead it ! This time you are obliged to help partner.

* 3 = invitational a 6-card suit 9-11 HCP.

 Your choice:
A: 2. Leading partner's suit is mandatory with no real suit of your own. Declarer did not bid NT as a rebid and was forced to show the spades stopper denying 2-cards in responder's suit.

Remember: Lead low to show 3 or 4 cards in partner's suit so partner can count how many cards in declarer's hand.
