What is a sequence? by linda j green

There are many decisions to make when it comes to making a lead against a suit, verses a no trump contract.

Three cards are a sequence in a no trump contract. Two cards are a sequence in a suit contract.

However, when one does not have a full three card sequence, and only one card is missing it is considered a full sequence. Let us look at the following hands, and you make a decision on which card to lead?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q 5 4 3 2
 J 10 8 6
 9 5
 4 3

Q: 1 - As South what card and which suit do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
---1NT

PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: J. When the opponents did not use Stayman looking for a 4-card major it is best to lead one of them. Leading the spade with no entry is not a good idea. Leading the Jack showing a 3-card sequence will not give away a trick and partner knows your holding. When one card is missing the (9) this is considered a full sequence.

 Your choice:
A: Q - Leading a Queen holding the Jack is a sequence in a suit contract. Dummy may have the King and partner the Ace. Help your partner. Should you not have the Jack of hearts and only a 3-card suit we would not lead the suit at all. Leading the J is from an interior sequence. It may have the King but NEVER an Ace as we do not lead away from an Ace in a suit contract!

* Strong jump shift = 18/19 HCP forcing to game
** Shows 6 clubs and 5 spades

 Your choice:
A: A - When the opponents show 11 cards in the 2 bid suits we have choices. Declarer has either 2 hearts and no diamonds or 2 diamonds and no hearts or a singleton in each of the red suits. Leading the Ace in anticipation to look at dummy will help guide you as what to play next. Thereafter the K should be automatic while you control the diamond suit.

 Your choice:
A: Q - When you hold one missing card the (10), this is a sequence of 3 cards. We do not lead 4th highest from your long suit. The spade suit has only two cards touching and should you lead that suit it would be the 4th highest - the 6.
As they did not use Stayman a major suit leaves one no alternative.

 Your choice:
A: J - When we are missing one card (9) this is known as a 3-card sequence. Leading the Q having a 2-card sequence is not wrong against a suit contract. However, the solidity of the diamond suit is better than the club suit.
