 L099 Negative inferences verses lead directing doubles by linda j green

Listening to the bidding is of extreme importance before making an opening lead. Do not get complacent when holding very few points.
We can often find the best lead by negative inferences.
Failure to make a lead directing double can often help us, when making a choice of leads as well. So let's get to work on the following hands!

Question 1

 9 8 7 6

 7 6 5

Q: 1 - What suit do you lead after listening to the bidding?

 Your choice:
A: 7. When partner has a chance to make a "lead-directing double" of an artificial suit, 2 clubs ,we have to use these negative inferences, and strive to lead another suit. As responder did not raise hearts, responder has 4 spades. That is out.
As the hand is virtually a Yarborough, lead the top diamond hoping to find partner with length in your short suit. After all, partner will have the entries to set up a suit. Help partner!

* invitational = 10 to a bad 12HCP- 4 trumps

 Your choice:
A: 3. When partner failed to double the artificial response to Blackwood of 5 hearts, one has two choices. Either the 9 of clubs, or from the queen, in diamonds. Try not to lead a doubleton unless partner bids the suit. It picks up free finesses for declarer, should they have two choices of a finesse.
Leading away from a Queen in a slam is often a good lead. Timing is everything, and hopefully one can develop a quick trick, before they can run a suit, should partner gain the lead.

Question 3

 A 5

Q: 3 - As South what suit do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast

 Your choice:
A: 2. Partner made a lead directing double of the artificial bid of 5, This shows honors in hearts. It does not promise a long suit but honors, wanting that lead. Declarer did not go to slam on that double knowing they might lose tricks, missing an Ace and not certain of 2 stoppers in hearts.
Without the double, the Q becomes an automatic lead. Why do we lead the 2 verses the 8? A low heart shows length either 3 or 4 cards. Leading the 8, partner may think you have a doubleton or a singleton.

* - Transfer to hearts

 Your choice:
A: 3. Partner doubled an artificial bid of a transfer to hearts. This double shows at least 2 of the top three honors and a 5-card diamond suit.
A low card lead shows at least 3 or 4 cards. Do not lead high, showing partner a doubleton or singleton.

 Your choice:
A: 8. Partner is rated to have very few points. Leading unsupported Aces is not a good idea as Aces are meant to capture Kings. Leading away from the club suit when they bid the suit is also a bad idea. On this hand we lead trumps. We lead passively holding all the remaining high card points.
