 Are non-honor leads 4th highest? by linda j green

Are non-honor leads always 4th from the top? Leading 4th highest should only be led from suits we want returned back.

Therefore, leading without an honor, one should lead second highest. In other words High HATES - Low LIKES!

Low cards promise an honor, asking for the suit back. High denies an honor, not wanting the suit returned.

A: 7. Second highest from no honor will not mislead partner. Leading the 4th highest, the 2, promises an honor. Do not do it!

Leading the 2 is 4th highest from an honor, but away from a Jack is usually avoided. However, that is your decision and is one's second choice.

A: 10. Leading the 2 is deceptive. Promises an honor. Lead the top of touching cards or the 9 shows no interest.

Leading passive will not give anything away.

* Stayman asks for a 4-card major.

 Your choice:
A: 6. When opener denies a 4-card major what do they hold? Of course the minors! Do not lead the 4th highest from your longest and strongest suit. Listen to the bidding. Second highest from a major does not promise an honor.
