 Opening leads against a NT contract when partner overcalls by linda j green

There are three reasons that our partner overcalls during an auction. One is for the lead, showing at least 2 of the top 3 honors, another is to obstruct the opponents bidding, thirdly to try and win the contract.

Remember that 3 NT contracts are a race between declarer and defense to establish a long suit. Generally it is best to lead Partner's suit, but which card shall we choose?

A: 8. When partner doubles an artificial suit, this promises at least 2 of the top 4 honors and a 5-card suit.
Opener passed the double as this shows only 2 cards in the spade suit. Should opener hold 3-cards, accept the transfer with 2 spades.

* Stayman - looking for a 4-card major

 Your choice:
A: 2. When partner doubles an artificial bid, this promises a 5-card suit and at least 2 of the top 4 honors. Responder guarantees a 4-card spade suit after Stayman.
When one holds 3 cards in the suit after partner doubles, that suit we lead LOW. This shows length, at least 3 or 4 cards in the suit. Should you lead the top, partner will not know how many cards the declarer holds in that suit.
