 "Job Opportunities" by Marti Ronemus

So, you're thinking about a second job, maybe a career change? How about becoming a Greeting Card Writer. Doesn't that sound like a pleasant way to make a living? Here are some tips from long-time successes in the field. 1) Write to that specific person, don't try to suit everyone. 2) Get used to rejection. Only maybe one in ten ideas will be accepted. 3) Don't use human faces. Cute kitties, outrageous giraffes, anything but people. 4) Learn to be a "lurker." Start eavesdropping conversations. Successful card writers steal from everyday life. 5) Don't think it's easy. Almost anyone can come up with one good card, but can you do it five days a week for years?

And so it is with bridge. Can you come up with a good bid every time? Hmmm.

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is such a nifty bid, and we haven't talked enough about it. Immediate cuebids are usually Michaels. (1-2 for example.) A cuebid later in the auction has different meanings. If the opponents have only bid ONE suit, a cuebid ASKS for a stopper. Here, the opponents have bid TWO suits. Our cuebid SHOWS a stopper and is similar to standing on the chair screaming at Pard to bid No-trump if he has a stopper in the other suit.

 Your choice:
A: 3: This time, since the opponents have only bid ONE suit, we are ASKING for a stopper. If Pard has one, his job description is to put us in 3 No-trump. Otherwise, think of something else.

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We love receiving party invitations in the mail or at the table, but this time, we have to refuse. We're flat, nothing extra, scattered honors. Resistible.

*Do you have a Spade stopper?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: Pard's 2 bid asks us to bid No-trump. If the opponents had bid TWO suits, he'd be showing a stopper. With only ONE suit bid, it's ASKING for a stopper. We've got one.
