 "Mellow Yellow" by Marti Ronemus

True confession: I'm a complete sucker for the "Despicable Me" Minions. How anyone can look at and listen to them without laughing is beyond me. Anyway, watching them in their latest movie got me thinking: Why are so many cartoon characters bright yellow? The Simpsons, SpongeBob, Peanuts' Woodstock, dozens more.

Indeed there are two reasons. First is visibility. Cartoon characters color schemes are based on making them stand out from their backgrounds. Since the sky is background so often, the color diametrically opposed on the color wheel, yellow, is used.

The second reason is psychological. The color yellow is associated with happiness and fun.

Now, as bridge players, we could wear yellow to make everyone around us happy. OR!! We can make our bids bright and clear so they stand out. Let's try that today.

Q: 1 - South wants to play, too. Your bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: We love that Negative Double for responders. It promises (cross your heart and hope to die) at least four of the other major, and usually tolerance for the fourth suit. Point count? Most agree that as responder, a ND can be as little as a nice 6 pts.

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Sigh, we have to sit this one out. We can't Negative Double. We can't bid No-trump (although some might) with a hand this weak. We can't really support Pard's Clubs. We're going to have to be a bystander this time.

BUT!! We've got a hand coming up with another chance to be bright yellow. Ready?
