"What's in YOUR Sock Drawer?" by Marti Ronemus

What do those Olympian champions do with their medals? A surprising number of them just tuck them in their sock drawer. Others, though, have gone in other directions.

Carl Lewis put one in his father's casket. When his mom questioned his decision, he said, "Don't worry. I'll earn plenty more." And he did!

Christie Rampone puts hers with her pots and pans. "No one will think to look there." Now they will. Better move them.

Lindsey Vonn keeps hers in her nightstand. "That way, if I've had a bad day, I can glance at them and know better times are ahead."

And so, for the next few minutes, let's pretend we are Olympians in bridge, and make some Gold decisions.

 9 8 7 6
 K 6 5

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: In a competitive auction, a raise of Pard's suit is the WEAKEST response we can give, and shows the total number of trump between us: One trick per trump. What when we have a GOOD hand? Stay tuned...

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 3
 A 9 5 4
 9 8 7 6
 K 6 5

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We can't bid the same thing with 11 pts that we bid with 7. So we are going to cuebid the opponent's suit. This promises 10 plus pts and trump support. It is forcing, forcing, forcing. This cuebid response is the bid that gains us the gold.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 4 3
 A 9 5 4
 9 8 7 6
 K 6 5

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Double
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We are in a competitive auction. To raise Pard's suit would show weakness, and we are weak. We're raising, again, to the level of trump in our combined hands.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 3
 A 9 5
 9 8 7 6
 K 6 5 2

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Double
?

 Your choice:
A: Redouble: We're promising a better-than-minimum hand. We can't raise Pard, but in bidding, when one door closes, often another opens, and we now have the redouble available.

Was this quiz too easy? Olympic athletes review the basics over and over. We want the gold.
