Responder Rebids "184,021,533" by Marti Ronemus

You have probably been pestered by one of Life's Persistent Questions: How many books have been published throughout history? Before we can answer that, we first have to answer the deceptively simple question, what is a book? Google Books (a Google-sponsored project to digitize every book, thereby having all knowledge in a single database!!) defines a book as "a tome is an idealized bound volume."

Well, be that as it may, let's have a drum roll, please. As of a few days ago, the answer is 184,021,533 books. We bridge players as a group are also big readers. I wonder how many of those we've read as a group? Luckily you won't have to search any books for today's quiz answers... we've got them for you. Today we're looking at opener rebids. Ready?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 2
 A J 9
 K J 10 4 3
 A J 9 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Rebidding 1 No-trump would be a perfect bid to show our minimum hand count, but it wouldn't describe our shape properly. We need to show we're holding nine cards in two suits. Our rebid is 2.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 2
 A J 9
 K J 10 4
 A J 9 4 3

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: This time, much as we'd like to show our second suit, we can't do it. Diamonds are higher-ranked than Clubs, and also Diamonds are a suit that Pard by-passed. That would be a Reverse, promising a point count we don't have. Folks often solve this problem by opening 1, and then rebidding the Clubs. It misleads on distribution, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

 A K J
 K J 10 4
 A J 9 4 3

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: This time we've got plenty of points to make a Reverse. Pard will know we have more Clubs than Diamonds, and a nice intermediate or better hand.
