Fit bids by responder by Matthias Huberschwiller

We will have a look at direct fit bids of the responder after the opening of one in a Major.

The most important thing to remember is that if the responder chooses to fit directly, he does not have a strong hand.

A fit on the 2-level promises a hand with 6-10 points and 3 or 4 trumps.
A fit on the 3-level promises a hand with 10 - 12 points and 4 trumps.
A fit on the 4-level is a weak bid. It shows very few points and a hand with 5 trumps.

Q: 3 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 – Here, your partner’s bid on the 3-level is a trial bid. Your partner has hopes to play game (or even a slam). He asks you for help in this suit and would like to know if you are rather minimum or maximum.

As you have a minimum hand and nothing helpful in clubs, you need to put the breaks on and bid 3.
