One bid is enough by Frank Stewart

Sometimes, one bid is enough to show exactly what you have, sometimes two bids are necessary to get the complete information across. Test yourself in these five examples. What has the bidding shown so far and how should you bid on?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8 4
 Q 4 3 2
 A 8 6 4
 A 9 6

Q: 1 - What will you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
DoublePass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Your negative double showed hearts but the wrong type of hand for a bid of two hearts. Partner "raised" the suit your double implied; his values are nearer to minimum. I could accept a pass, but I would risk a raise to three hearts. He may hold 7 5 2, A K 7 6, K 3, K J 7 5.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A K 6 2
 K 10 8 7
 A 3
 Q 9 4

Q: 2 - You open 1NT, and your partner responds two clubs, Stayman. You bid two spades (because your spades are stronger), and he bids 3NT. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass2Pass
2Pass3NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Partner's two clubs might have been the start of a sequence to sign off at a club partial (or to do something else), but his actual sequence shows interest in finding a fit in a major suit. Since he didn't raise your spades, he has hearts. Bid four hearts.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 8 7 4
 A 10 3
 K 8 2
 10 5 2

Q: 3 - What will you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Your 2NT tried for game and promised about 11 points with balanced pattern. Your partner had options, but his three clubs suggests five or six clubs, only three-card spade support and minimum values. Pass. To persist with 3NT would be a serious violation.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A 3 2
 A Q 3
 9 8 5 3 2
 Q 10

Q: 4 - You play standard methods with your partner. What will you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Since you have no fewer than three useful honors, you can commit to game. In the modern "two-over-one" style where a two-level response is game-forcing, you can bid two spades, leaving room to investigate for the best contract. In "Standard" methods, jump to three spades, forcing.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 7 4
 7 5 4
 Q 6
 A J 10 6 5

Q: 5 - What will you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
-2DoublePass
?

2: Weak Two

 Your choice:
A: 3: Your partner has opening values -- probably more since he has obliged you to respond at the level of three. He may have support for the unbid suits or a strong hand with a suit of his own. In any case, you have enough strength to commit to game. First, cue-bid three hearts.
